In the early 1950s, poliomyelitis, or polio virus, ran rampant and terrorized families. Roy's parents, driven by fear, fled the city. Roy, his brother, and his sister were abruptly deposited in the sparsely populated dairy country of southeast Wisconsin. Roy develops a close relationship with the old bachelor farmer on the hill. It's from this farmer that he is taught farming and this land's history, which is replete with legends and myths. Roy and his brother and sister develop a strong bond with each other during those early years on the farm. They explore the land, experiencing adventures, many of which contain the otherworldly.
