A concise juvenile history of Grant's siege of Vicksburg

There are only four volumes dealing with battles in the Civil War Series (to date) and they are the pivotal battles of Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg. Actually, that last one, and the subject of this juvenile history by David C. King, was a long drawn on campaign (March 31-July 4, 1863) that was ultimately more of a siege than a battle. The book begins by establishing the importance of Vicksburg as "The Gibraltar of the West" and the key to the Mississippi River (although Winfield Scott's Anaconda plan is not specifically mentioned). The campaign is broken down into discrete units, such as the Battle of Champion Hill and the actual 47 day siege. The result is a concise and informative history of the Vicksburg campaign and its significance. This was a fairly complex campaign and King gives young readers a clear sense of what happened. A final section explains how the fate of the Confederacy was sealed by the fall of Vicksburg. The book is illustrated with historic photographs and etchings, along with a map showing how Grant moved on the Confederate stronghold. Sidebars go into details on the commanders of both armies, the attempt by the Federals to blow up a hole in the Rebel lines, and a look at the artillery used in the battle. "The Battle of Vicksburg" is part of the Triangle Histories of the Civil War, where the idea is that the subject is covered from various angles, in this case a battle like Vicksburg, a leader like Ulysses S. Grant, and a President, in this case Abraham Lincoln. However, there is no explicit attempt to link up the books and the overlap is essentially the same as what you would have with any juvenile series of histories and/or biographies dealing with the Civil War. This does not detract form tese being an informative series of little books.
