The Trent & Mersey Canal Through Time

Completed in 1777 and initially known as the "Grand Trunk," the 92-mile Trent & Mersey Canal was the first great through route of the canal era and a strategic link in famous early engineer James Brindley's "Grand Cross" project to make canal links between England's four major river navigations and estuaries. Climbing from the Bridgewater Canal on Merseyside through Cheshire's plain, over (and through) Staffordshire's hill country, and descending into Derbyshire to the Trent at Shardlow, it was the prime project that first demonstrated the effectiveness of canals carrying. Its great promoter was of course the famous potter Josiah Wedgwood. The author details in historical and modern images the changing fortunes of Brindley's great project. He has lived and worked by this canal for 48 years and campaigned for its future--including the famous Anderton Boat Lift--as one of longest serving chairmen of the Trent & Mersey Canal Society.
