The Travels of Marco Polo: The Venetian

"The Travels of Marco Polo: The Venetian" stands as one of the most significant and influential travelogues in world history. This classic work documents the epic journey of the Venetian merchant Marco Polo as he traveled across the Silk Road to the court of the great Mongol Emperor, Kublai Khan. Spanning over two decades of exploration, the narrative provides a detailed and fascinating account of the cultures, landscapes, and political structures of 13th-century Asia, much of which was entirely unknown to the Western world at the time.

Through his observations, Polo describes the immense scale of the Mongol Empire, the sophisticated administrative systems of China, and the exotic wonders of the East, from the use of coal and paper money to the intricacies of the spice trade. The book serves as both a historical record and a gripping adventure, capturing the perils and marvels of medieval travel. Edited by Manuel Komroff, this account preserves the vivid descriptions that have captivated readers for centuries. "The Travels of Marco Polo: The Venetian" remains a vital primary source, offering unparalleled insights into a period of profound global transition and the enduring legacy of cross-cultural discovery.

Barely believable adventures.

A very remarkable book written in the 13th century. Many secrets were revealed when Marco returned. And many interesting explanations of things like the origin of cinnamon. Marco writes well enough about his travels, and you feel that you are there. You can follow the trail if you have a map. He describes the flora and fauna of each region and describes the economics and industry of the region. Example: "The women of the superior class are in like manner free from superfluous hairs; their skins are fair, and they are well-formed." It is interesting to see how little has changed from Marco Polo's 13th century to now.
