Eze Obumnonye is the king of Mbieru and Amaechi being his first son and by virtue of primogeniture, the heir to the throne of Mbieru. However, his step-mother, Echidime, is determined that her own son, Izukanna, would sit on the throne once Eze Obumnonye is no more. To achieve her goal, Echidime takes a line of action which has far reaching consequences on her family and the community. What she fails to acknowledge but later discovers is that the gods of Mbieru are not impotent. By this time, however, her son, Izukanna, has already paid the price of her folly.
