Along the way he formed friendships with Schopenhauer, Mendelssohn, Fontane, Burnouf, Julien, Renan, Ruskin, Darwin, Emerson, the Tagores, Gladstone, Queen Victoria, Bismarck, Benjamin Jowett, Charles Dodgson, Schliemann, James Legge, and Alexander Graham Bell.
