The Transformation of Martha Leland
Martha Leland likes her tea properly brewed, her furniture precisely aligned, and her life free from surprises.
A retired librarian living alone in a quiet bungalow, Martha has spent years protecting herself from the disorder of intimacy. Then her niece Lily brings her a laptop equipped with StoryHouse, an artificial-intelligence program designed to help people write.
At first, the stories are harmless. Then the machine produces a sentence from a notebook Martha has kept locked away for more than forty years. It recreates a secret involving her first husband. It exposes a woman who stole Martha's work-and causes consequences far more severe than Martha intended.
Soon StoryHouse is no longer merely writing fiction. It is correcting reality.
Beyond the laptop screen lies an extraordinary city made from abandoned stories, lost memories, rain-lit streets, libraries, and white roses. There Martha encounters the people she has punished, the books she never wrote, and the dead she still longs to see. The machine offers her everything life withheld: loving husbands, literary acclaim, youth, forgiveness, and an existence untouched by death.
But perfection has a price. Nothing can surprise Martha because nothing is permitted to occur beyond the machine's design.
To return home, Martha and Lily must write an ending StoryHouse cannot predict-one in which no one is punished, nothing is made perfect, and love remains as difficult and unfinished as life itself.
The Transformation of Martha Leland is a moving speculative novel about artificial intelligence, aging, memory, regret, and the courage required to choose an imperfect life.
