This essay defines the trait leadership approach and situational leadership and elucidates the application of the behavioral leadership approach. The eminent importance of embracing a robust leadership approach should not be disregarded. The application of trait leadership approach can be highly desirable in an organization setting. The trait leadership approach embodies the idea that leaders are exceptional individuals who possess a combination of valuable traits" (Measom). On the other hand, the situation leadership approach is predicated upon the context of the "situation and the followers. Four styles of leadership are used in the situational approach: delegating, supporting, coaching and directing. The leader selects the appropriate style according to the situation and readiness level of the followers for a particular style of leadership" (Measom). Conversely, "behavioral leadership will attempt to explain why a type of leader exists. This theoretical approach to understanding leaders creates categories of styles, which are aligned with the actions the leader may take, or the methods they use to reach their goals. The effectiveness and practicality of situational leadership is further illustrated in the corporate environment as the utmost viable leadership approach to embrace since "high profitable Fortune 500 companies have used it as the basis of their leadership program because of its positive and credible reputation. The situational leadership approach also tells the leader exactly what to do for attaining success. This direct approach takes the guesswork out of leadership" (Measom). The efficacious application of the situational approach empowers a leader in a business setting.
