Francisco (a Spanish trader) sets out in early 1680 with a load of goods from Mexico City. He encounters bloodthirsty bandits, a strangely sly and determined jaguar, and the harsh, dry conditions of the trail on his journey north. He eventually makes it to Santa Fe, only to be sent to Pecos Pueblo on urgent business by Governor Otermin himself. While there he has a life changing experience but soon finds himself caught in the midst of the Pueblo Revolt. He must flee back to Santa Fe and make the journey back south, encountering more adventure and hardship along the way.
