The Tow and I: From Chairlifts to Sandtraps

The autobiographical account of the lives of two American Dreamers, Peggy and Jack Kurlander, The Tow and I chronicles the pursuit of happiness by having a vision and the determination to make an idea a reality while living a life of meaning filled with personal setbacks and triumphs. The Tow and I describes how the couple met, their courtship, the building of failed businesses and realizing great but fleeting personal wealth creation while seeing their shared vision endure and flourish now. Most importantly, Peggy and Jack lived a life of personal enrichment and satisfaction unrivaled by the great majority of Americans. Living this dream was filled with adventures and humorous events for, and with, friends, family, and the patrons of what has now become Northwestern New Jersey's skiing and golfing life style mecca. Peggy chose the book's name, "The Tow and I" based upon a book titled "The Egg and I", first published in 1945, by American author Betty MacDonald about her adventures and travels as a young wife on a chicken farm on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. The book is based on the author's experiences as a newlywed in trying to acclimate and operate a small chicken farm with her husband Robert Heskett from 1927 to 1931 near Chimacum, Washington (from Wikipedia). Not unlike Betty McDonald and her chicken farming husband; Peggy helped her husband Jack pursue the dream of developing Northwest New Jersey into a resort destination not always knowing what to expect. There were no manuals for either Jack or Peggy to follow and I guess that the art of chicken farming and snow making are both careers that you learn by doing and finding your own answers.Jack and Peggy have a solid reputation for dealing fairly and honestly valuing relationships more so than money. For Jack money was never the primary motivator in his life; friendship and shared success and achievement were always his prime directive. His personal benchmark was always about bringing all within his circle to greater sustainable wellbeing.Written in a folksy and humoristic style, Peggy has chosen fascinating and fun incidents about couple's challenges and achievements in life documenting their contribution to what has grown to become a destination and lifestyle enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of skiing and golfing enthusiasts who visit Sussex County each year. Not only do these recreational attractions bring new visitors and residents to the county now, but the areas have incubated and influenced nearly any enthusiast from the New York Metropolitan Region now living and visiting resort areas around the globe. More than likely if you grew up in this region and are a skier, your passion started at properties created by Jack and Peggy.
