Alone in a conference room, a young researcher, Kurt Weil, worked on a mathematical formula that would include time in the analysis of student test results. Little did he know that his success would lead to unraveling the secrets of an ancient Indian mathematician and, with it, the discovery of a powerful, new technology (the torus). It would, by accident, lead to interfering with terrorists intent on bombing Washington, D.C., and, with that, to raising the suspicions of the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. On the plus side, it would also prompt the return of Alexandra Sedaitis, the love of his life.Work with Kurt's friend and partner, Raghu Govindarajan, a computer scientist, expanded their control and the versatility of the torus technology. And with that, the government quickly imposed a top-secret security classification on it (although not sure what exactly it was that they were classifying) and pressured Kurt to surrender his secrets. He stubbornly refused. The press of events, including the terrorist attack on Washington, leads Kurt and Raghu to a project on an oil drilling rig in the Chukchi Sea and to reluctantly join a covert Navy operation in the East China Sea. And with that, in their absence, Alex and Roshni, Raghu's wife, are left to deal with the suspicions of he FBI and DHS.
