Judith Merril was an American-born Canadian science fiction writer, editor, critic, and anthologist whose work helped broaden the literary and emotional range of modern science fiction. Born Judith Josephine Grossman in 1923, she began publishing under the name Judith Merril during the 1940s and became one of the field's most influential early female voices. Her fiction frequently explored social change, politics, family relationships, and the psychological consequences of scientific progress.

Merril was also renowned as an editor and advocate for ambitious, experimental speculative fiction. Through her influential anthologies and critical writing, she introduced readers to emerging authors and encouraged science fiction to engage more seriously with contemporary culture and human experience. She later settled in Canada, where she remained an important figure in literary and science-fiction circles until her death in 1997.
