Book Overview

This large print edition features an easy-to-read larger type size while preserving the complete text of the original edition.

In 2011, Eunju Oh opens her door to greet a young Korean American woman holding a familiar-looking knife -- a knife Eunju hasn't seen in thirty years and that connects her to a place she'd hoped to leave behind. In South Korea in the 1980s, young Eunju and her mother are homeless. They're sent to live in a state-sanctioned reformatory center that claims to rehabilitate the nation's citizens but hides a more violent reality. While Eunju and her mother form a tight-knit community with the other women, two brothers, Sangchul and Youngchul, make increasingly desperate decisions -- and all are forced down a path of survival, the repercussions of which will echo for decades.

Perfectly lovely!

A perfectly lovely cozy listen for the holidays! I am sure everyone has wondered at one time or another if their life could have been different from what it is, whether it is trouble in relationships or finding it hard to connect with your teenager. And that is what Greta Parks is experiencing, wishing life could be like a Maple Gold commercial (something she got to experience for years as an actor with her family being the face of it). Like other cozy fantasies, this book gets a touch of magic from a mysterious coffee shop that can grant wishes (sort of). It is a wonderful tale of finding the truth of what you actually want, reconnecting with family and learning to love them because they are not perfect, and living in the present, not stuck in the past which always looks better due to rose colored glasses. I really enjoyed listening to this and following along with Greta as she experiences something magical and finds her way during a holiday season of many changes. It hits all the right feels. The narrator, Nicola Barber, does a wonderful job in bringing the characters and magic of the coffee shop to life and I am glad I got the chance to listen to this!
