This study of the time before the kings is developed in three distinct frameworks: commentary, chronology and corroboration. First, parts two and three offer a chapter-by-chapter commentary on the book of Joshua and the sacred volumes covering the period of the judges. The inclusion of numerous maps, figures and tables are intended to further elucidate these texts. Often given only cursory or selective treatment, much of their specific content is unfamiliar. Applications to the church will be drawn when appropriate, serving to illustrate biblical principles that span the dispensations of divine law. These volumes of scripture are more than just collections of heroic narratives furnishing material with which to regale children. They have lessons to impart to spiritual Israel. As Paul wrote, "these things happened to them the Israelites] as an example, but they were written down for our Christians] instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come." Second, part four presents a biblical chronology from the fifteenth through the eleventh centuries BC. Chronology is to history what the skeleton is to the human body. By examining the sacred text for chronological datum, it is possible to construct a timeline that grounds Joshua and the judges in their historical contexts. By better understanding their world, one comes to a more complete knowledge of the scriptures. Third, these subjects will be approached from a historical perspective. Part five reviews an abundance of archaeological and other evidence that support and illuminate the biblical account. Topics such as what did Jericho look like when Joshua marched against it and from where did the Philistines originate are addressed. Accepting the Bible as a legitimate and invaluable primary source furthers mankind's attempt to reconstruct the ancient past.
