The use of knotwork to curse or bind a spell has long been used in the Celtic countries of Britain, and indeed it is not only these countries that use this kind of piseog or curse. Druids would walk in the light of a sickle moon weaving and incantation in the making of these charms. Each knot like any language has its own meaning. They were intricate and often woven with cord or ribbon and might contain strands of a person's hair.
It's known that followers of Manannan were known to have weaved these knots out of reeds and then thrown them into the bogs as an offering. One English Queen after a prolonged and very difficult labour died shortly after delivery. The child lived into childhood but was never very strong. A charm of this nature was found in the dead queen's chamber, the three midwives were hanged for witchcraft. This seems very unfair as removing the queen gained them nothing. Possibly the reason for this act was the dead queen's brothers, who were considered by many at the English court as upstarts. If this was the reason then the King did indeed look for another wife. These knots were not only used to curse, they could also be used for good, such as healing and removing ardent lovers who where no longer wanted.
