A Must-Read for anyone interested in Tibet, or China for that matter

THE TIBET GAMBLE is a well-written, journalistic/scholarly book that takes you in among the Tibetan people, both inside and outside of Tibet, and explores the Tibet Question in new ways. The author essentially shares his insights from years of research, travel, and interviews among the Tibetan Diaspora, but does so in a captivating way, making this a quick, enjoyable, and most importantly, INFORMATIVE read. Jackson not only traveled around Tibetan refugee communities in Nepal, India, and the United States, but he also went to Tibet TWICE to interview local Tibetans (often clandestinely!). As such, he is able to juggle "this-is-what-they-said" information with episodes of editorial-style writing. The interviews are tightly woven into each chapter; they expose the Chinese Government for what they truly are, and they show that stereotypes of Tibetans are not at all what many think. It is high time to re-examine how everyone (chinese, tibetan, western supporter) views this issue. Anyone who thinks they understand China or Tibet should pick this book up- it will definitely make you think. I consider myself a China expert to a small degree, and I have followed the Tibet situation for some time now, and I was blown away by how much I learned and how easy it was to read. The book is not some boring thesis by any means, yet the level of scholarship is impressive. And you'll be blown away by the shocking indictment of Chinese activities (then AND now) in Tibet. If you are interested in Tibet or want to understand what exactly the host of the 2008 Summer Olympics (China) is doing to its minority regions, then YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK.
