It's 1985, and folk singer Jack Vetch is about to set out on hjs long-awaited comeback tour when he is assaulted outside an Italian restaurant. He has no memory of the incident, but his injuries mean that the tour has to be postponed, His old adversary, the irascible and inappropriate Detective Sergeant Arrowsmith, suspects Jack's drummer, Jeff Sharples, of attacking him, but without proof, until Sharples himself is murdered in the same spot two days later.

Meanwhile, Jack's former manager, Harry March, attempts to muscle in on Jack's comeback, Arrowsmith's bagman, DC Philip Gosling, finally begins a relationship with Bonnie Weaver, the daughter of Jack's former partner, and music journalist Mark Harvey comes looking for an exclusive.
