The Three Sisters of Cill Airne follows the life of three orphan girls in 10th century Ireland. Orphaned when their house caught fire and their parents both died, the village of Cill Airne could not support the girls and sent them out into the land on their own. Surviving made them strong, but their spirit made them kind, generous and independent.They know the forests for its abundance of medicinal and edible plants and for the small critters who inhabit their surroundings. Mary becomes a midwife, Karen knows the plants and Helen tends the animals and keeps the books. This book contains no violence but has much compassion for people in need. If there is a lesson to learn from the book, it is that kindness and caring for people is repaid more than once over. In a time when money does not exist but for the value of what you have to trade, the sisters have much to trade and make all of the people they meet wealthy.
