THE BOOK: The Thread of Gold, God's Purpose, the Cross, and Me is Jane Carole Anderson's personal testimony about her walk with Jesus through her lifetime and the experiences she and her family suffered at the hands of their Christian brothers...men who were in the leadership of the church in which they were "caught". See chapter 1 online at her website. I'm very familiar with this book because I was on the edit team, so I'd like to review it from that perspective. Two things stand out and remain with me. There are many others but I'll share these two: 1) There is no bitterness. With all of the things that were "not right" about this group of Christian leaders, Jane had every right to be angry and bitter about the experience. However, in her testimony today, there is none. How can that be? Enter Jesus. He is everything He claimed to be. Jane tells of experience after experience of Jesus offering to give her her choices, or to choose Him instead. Over a lifetime, by choosing Jesus, He has woven Himself into her life, her personal walk with Him, as a Thread of Gold. By the end of the book, this compelling story inspires you to want to walk with Jesus yourself, and experience that Thread of Gold in your own life. 2) The Cross. There is a passage in this book about the Cross of Jesus which rivals the finest literary prose I have ever read. It is a treasure which rings with the truth of Who Jesus is and what price He paid for me. THE CONTROVERSY: The biggest controversy about this book is that it exists at all. The leadership of the group, the Local Church of Witness Lee (deceased), is litigious toward those who criticize it, having filed or threatened many lawsuits against their Christian brothers in an attempt to silence its critics. The leadership suppresses the voice of its own members with such phrases as "don't say anything negative". Warnings of a ruined Christian walk if you leave the Local Church discourage the members from leaving. Shunning those who break the rules is commonplace. As a result, The Thread of Gold stands alone as a book published by a former member. This book has been openly criticized by "Dan Williams" (a psudonym---chapter 1 online) saying among other things that he was right to do what he did basically because Jane wrote a book. It's highly unlikely that "Dan" actually read the book. To an extent, the Local Churches of Witness Lee have become synonymus with the publishing company founded by Witness Lee to publish his works, The Living Stream Ministry, now presided over by "Dan Williams". I also met with the Local Church of Witness Lee for 15 years, so many of Jane's experiences match my own to one extent or another. Thank you Jane for your courage and obedience in telling your story.
