Archivist Julian Fayette and journalist Mara Vale survived the activation of ORISON, a system trained on their investigation and on the public reaction to it. Now the same architecture has opened a second route along the thirty-third parallel.
At its centre is Nora Kline, a sixteen-year-old girl identified through the false facts she cannot leave uncorrected. Before police admit she is missing, a memorial is prepared in her name. A body is supplied. Her life is closed on paper.
The route promises Julian the origin of the child studies, proof of James Shelby Downard's role, his original assessment file, and the names of every active child. But it is not guiding him toward truth. It is testing whether he can become Nora's mentor-and teaching hundreds of other selected children through every decision he makes.
To save Nora, Julian may have to abandon the explanation that would complete his own life.
