The story is lost in excess gore.

This is “John Carpenter's The Thing (1982)” AKA “The Thing” (1982) Not to be confused with “The Thing from Another World”(1951) with James Arness. Yep, we are confronted by a dog-splitting being from the great beyond. Being isolated, we must evaluate, track, and kill this most obviously menacing "Thing". But what, who, and where is it? In an attempt at graphic surprises, we have sacrificed the character and mood of the book ("Who Goes There" by John W. Campbell Jr.), and the original movie ("The Thing from Another World)". Ah, you say, what if you do not compare? Still, it is a sticky blob story that has no personality of its own. The one thing that makes this thing is that it is psychic. Surprisingly to me is to find that the computer voice is done by Adrienne Barbeau. This movie is fun to watch and say, "don't look there," but it is far from extraordinary.

A rare quality re-make

Usually re-makes of classics are very poor. This is an exception. Note this is a film by John Carpenter so if gooey gory monsters aren't your thing you can skip this. It has no nuance at all. Plot fault: you really could care less if these unappealing characters live or die. None are believable as scientists. Bonus: the feature bonus tells about the story "The Thing" came from etc. This DVD arrived in fine condition.
