The year 873 is a defining time for Norway; after years of devastating in-fighting, Harald Fairhair emerges as the sole ruler of Norway. Rognwald Eysteinsson, Jarl of More and Harald's right hand man, travels the kingdom to instill good will among the subjects and shore up alliances.

Rognwald sails to T nsberg, a trading village in the former petty kingdom of Vestfold, an area far from the political machinations of Harald in Trondheim. T nsberg has prospered throughout the years, and the people there live peacefully, pagans and Christians alike.

All that changes upon Rognwald's arrival. While he and his men attend a wedding, a high-ranking official is murdered. Rognwald puts his celebrated Law Speaker, Ari Gustavson, on the case for a hasty resolution before Harald catches wind of the misfortune.

Ari's investigation is barely under way when more deaths occur. Are they isolated incidents or somehow connected? Ari has no shortage of suspects, but the more he digs for answers, the more questions arise. His quest for the truth takes Ari down into depths he would rather not go...
