The cliff face they called The Mouth of Kharon was supposed to be just another dangerous rock formation-something to photograph, to fence off, and to forget.
Then the rockslide exposed the staircase.
Carved into sheer basalt, spiraling down into blackness, the stair is too smooth, too perfect, too deliberate to be natural. Its walls are lined with symbols that aren't quite language and aren't quite diagrams, but something unsettlingly in between-like instructions written for a mind that doesn't think the way humans do.
A small expedition is sent in to document the site before it's sealed:

Soren Vale - security, whose job is simple: get everyone out alive.
They descend with careful pacing and professional confidence.
They expect rock, dust, maybe a buried temple.
Instead, they find a stair that repeats them.
