this book was a huge bestseller in the UK and I am at a loss to understand why no-one over here snapped it up. It starts off gently, as a blackly comic "slacker room-mate" picture of the world of work from the point of view of all those people who graduate from college and don't set the world on fire. And halfway through, just as it looks like that's all you're going to get, you're hit in the face with a twist so shocking your hair stands on end. This is an amazing, seductive book, so seemingly simply written that you don't realise how tightly constructed it is until very close to the end, which describes friendship and what it means in the rawest terms. Just brilliant.
