Book Overview

Antonio Bernal is a Guatemalan refugee in Los Angeles haunted by memories of his wife and child, who were murdered at the hands of a man marked with yellow ink. In a park near Antonio's apartment, Guillermo Longoria extends his arm and reveals a sinister tattoo--yellow pelt, black spots, red mouth. It is the sign of the death squad, the Jaguar Battalion of the Guatemalan army.

This chance encounter between Antonio and his family's killer ignites a psychological showdown between these two men. Each will discover that the war in Central America has migrated with them as they are engulfed by the quemazones--"the great burning" of the Los Angeles riots. A tragic tale of loss and destiny in the underbelly of an American city, The Tattooed Soldier is Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter H?ctor Tobar's mesmerizing exploration of violence and the marks it leaves upon us.

Trauma, Displacement, and Vengeance

Héctor Tobar’s The Tattooed Soldier is a powerful exploration of trauma, displacement, and vengeance. Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles, the novel vividly portrays the struggles of Antonio, a Guatemalan immigrant living on the streets after losing everything to circumstances beyond his control. Through Antonio’s journey—escaping government terror in Guatemala, working as an underemployed dishwasher, and eventually confronting the soldier who murdered his wife and child—Tobar provides a poignant window into the lives of the homeless and the immigrant experience. The novel seamlessly intertwines gripping flashbacks with present-day events, offering deep insight into how each character's past shaped their destiny. Tobar masterfully humanizes immigration’s complexities, shedding light on the profound injustices and impossible choices faced by those forced to flee their homelands. Both a thriller and a sobering reflection on systemic inequality, The Tattooed Soldier is a vital read for anyone seeking to understand the human stories behind the immigration debate.

Great Reading!!

The book is a political-love thriller set in the 1980s during the civil war in Guatemala; and most of Central America. I would recommend this book to students who are studying Latin American Foreign Policy!!

A truly great novel.

This beautifully constructed novel has everything: profoundly moving characters and situations; penetratingvision into the political economy of the United States and Latin America; an invaluable history lesson; social realismof the highest order; psychological and ideologicalprofundity; a revelation of the true meaning of the so-called"global village." I am now assigning it in both graduateand undergraduate courses here at Rutgers University inNewark.

Speechless!

Where can I begin with this book!? I'm surprised that many people have still to read this book. It's centered around the time of the L.A. Riots, but does not compete with the turmoil concerning both of the central characters in this novel. I highly recommend for anyone's library. I can't keep mine on my shelf because I keep sharing it and making fans of this great work. BUY IT NOW!

A tremendous story of the pain of civil war in Guatemala.

This is a finely written book. I lived in Guatemala in the late 70s, and it has been difficult to explain how that felt. The author evoked those old emotions and memories, drawing me into the lives of his characters. I recommend this as a riviting book that can't be put down until the story is finished. But also a novel that I rarely see in English, one that explores the richness of the individuals and their various heritages too often grouped under the term "hispanic".

An extraordinary novel: gripping, powerful and true.

The last novel I read at one sitting, a long time ago, was Dreiser's An American Tragedy. This more modern American tragedy may be even better. This story literally pulls the reader along, and ever more deeply into lives seldom acknowledged in American letters. Without being in the least didactic, Tobar also brings us closer to the human face of secret wars abroad and homegrown homelessness. As someone who has spent some time in the neighborhoods Tobar depicts, I was impressed by Tobar's fine eye and ear. No doubt most readers will be most impressed with The Tatooed Soldier as an exceptional tale of the most unexceptional human qualities: love, anguish, guilt, revenge, and -- if we are lucky -- liberation. An extraordinary accomplishment.
