The Tale of Benny Badger: The Adventures of Benny Badger and His Nocturnal Quests

By Arthur Scott Bailey and Harry L (Illustrator) Smith

Book Overview

"The Tale of Benny Badger" by Arthur Scott Bailey is a charming narrative that follows the nocturnal adventures of Benny Badger, a creature who thrives on the high, dry plains. Benny is a dedicated digger, known for his powerful body and strong claws, which he uses to dig holes both for fun and in pursuit of ground squirrels and prairie dogs. Despite his somewhat solitary nature, Benny encounters various characters, including the cunning Mr. Coyote, who offers to help him catch ground squirrels. However, Benny soon realizes that Mr. Coyote's assistance is more of a hindrance than a help, as Mr. Coyote is more interested in taking advantage of Benny's hard work than contributing to it. Throughout the story, Benny's interactions with other animals, such as the sly Mr. Fox and a proud prairie chicken, reveal his straightforward and determined character. Benny's adventures are not without challenges, as he navigates the complexities of animal interactions and the threat of a rancher planning to disrupt the prairie dog village. Despite these obstacles, Benny's love for digging and his cleverness in dealing with his neighbors highlight his resilience and resourcefulness. The narrative is a delightful exploration of Benny's world, filled with humor and the simple joys of life on the plains.
