This short story accompanies the memoir 'The Summer Children' and is set in Claregalway Co. Galway in 1950. As children, Bernadette, and her cousins were unaware of the struggles and sacrifices of their hardworking families. In an era when children were seen and not heard life was a lot simpler, but they had responsibilities beyond their years. For most children school life ended when 'the Primary' was sat at twelve or thirteen, and children, depending on their age and sex became working adults. This tale or tail (!) should be enjoyed within this context.
