By the middle of the 5th century much of the western half of the Roman Empire was falling to waves of barbarian invaders. It seemed like the end of the world for those living through it. The eastern half of the Empire, with its capital at Constantinople, which had once been called Byzantium, was equally stressed, but endured with its territory still mostly intact.
A succession of Emperors swore the decline of the West was something they would reverse one day and restore the Empire to all it had been, but they were besieged by enemies on all sides and blighted with rebellious generals and dissensions among the various Christian factions.
Life was cruel for men and harsher still for women. More than half the population were slaves with as much rights as farm animals. War, persecution, disease, injury and childbirth took many to their graves before their natural span.
Yet there were still opportunities for the lowest of the low to challenge the hand that fate had dealt them.
