A disappointing read with disrespectful characters.

This book based on the description as well as reviews from others really made "The Summer Of Stanley" sound like a sweet gem of a book.
Once we read it though I was so disappointed. From a Christian moms point of view, this book promoted so much sibling rudeness and disrespect that was never addressed or corrected by the mother. The book also starts out with the grandfather going over the mother's authority to give the gift of Stanley to Molly. She is clearly not ok with this gift and yet the grandfather ignores her and gives the gift anyways. The mother is not a warm character either and comes off as joyless and visibly annoyed with life's circumstances. Her husband is away at war, but as a Christian I would have liked to see the mother portrayed as still kind and teaching her children through their trial of the children's dad being away, a goat being added to the family as well as dealing with the children's unkind fellowship with one another.
Where other readers seemed to finish this book feeling touched by it and eager to reread it I found it off putting and it will be going right into my donation pile unfortunately.
