Do you love gambling? Not just playing blackjack or roulette, but stepping away from the demands of everyday life and enjoying the glitz of a casino? Lee Rudolph's The Sultan of Atlantic City moves beyond the games of cards and dice, bringing the ambiance and nitty-gritty details of the casino world together until the setting itself begins to take on character. Loners, sharks, pros, and a relentless line of hopeful amateurs make their way to The Sultan, all lending flavor to the casino as they pass through its doors. One fateful day, this disparate group of Sultan aficionados finds itself joined by The Lords of Swords, a local gang with an eye for a quick buck. The bumbling Swords aren't aware that their big plans for extortion and revenge are more of a gamble than a sure thing. When The Swords take on The Sultan's quirky regulars and staff, all bets are off and much mayhem ensues. Rudolph's greatest strength as a writer is his knack for character description. He's able to juggle a large cast while maintaining each character's distinct and memorable voice. The clear and easy prose extends to all discussions about gambling, and Rudolph includes quick, straightforward explanations which allow readers unfamiliar with the games to feel right at home. A long list of character introductions early on slows down the narrative pace; however, by the middle of the book anticipation builds as the characters begin to take their places for the climatic confrontation. Humorous and light, The Sultan of Atlantic City is a fun read, especially for anyone who's ever felt the gambler's itch. Several of the characters even offer their own brand of tips to fellow gamers - but of course, there are no guarantees once you hit the tables. The book itself is a much better bet, as readers are assured of a relaxing afternoon in amusing company.
