Storytelling for entertainment, teaching values and life lessons is common in Africa. Among the Mbum people in the North-West Province of Cameroon, a good conversation is often prefaced or interlaced with a good riddle, proverb or folktale. In this delightful folktale, the most desired eligible bachelor in the village is called Ngala. He tells all potential brides he eats the plates and dinnerware his food is served on. Because dinnerware is a symbol of status and prosperity in this village, his proposals for marriage are all rejected. All potential brides are turned off when they hear what he does to his plates after eating from them. He and his parents are getting worried as girl after girl turns him down when they learn about this hideous character trait of his.
