I loved this book for several reasons. It is an amazingly well-written account of an extraordinary ordinary woman. As an oncology nurse, I am inspired by Elda's survival from cancer not once, but FOUR times! I have purchased copies and have given them to a few patients of mine, particularly those with multiple episodes of cancer. Her story has the power to offer hope to those who need it. I also have ancestors who endured a similar voyage to this country from Italy in the late 1800s and early 1900s and feel as though this book has captured for me some of their possible experiences in the San Francisco of long ago. The descriptive narrative provides a snapshot of life in a different time. This story does not mince words, either. Elda is not portrayed as a saintly martyr, but as a real person facing some of life's toughest challenges, such as marital infidelity and early grandparenthood. As a real person, she is much more fascinating and accessible to real people like me who read her story. I am inspired by the wisdom of Elda. Despite increasing difficulties with her health, she remains positive and sets forth a beautiful example of how we all can look for the sweet things in life - the sugar in the bottom of our cup. Last, but certainly not least, this book is so well-written that it reads like a dream. I am looking forward to reading other books by this very talented author.

This book is a candid report of a long life. The emphasis is on family - providing a realistic portrayal of various family members, not always flattering but giving a real sense of their personalities. Elda comes off as loyal, though not always wise. She is brave through four cancer episodes. Her son and husband are difficult but ultimately problems resolve. Patricia and Elda make a wonderful team in telling Elda's story in a compelling read.
Inspirationl, wonderful. I loved it.

I just finished this fabulous book--for the second time. I read it right before Christmas, ended up buying scores for my family and friends as gifts. To begin the new year with a good attitude, I re-read the book just this week (January 10, 2005). Elda's words, as told by Patricia Henley are worth living by. Thank you for this "easy read" inspiring book. Sylvia A. Crawford
