From birth, Shane Anders, Evelyn Bryce, Connor Helmuth, and Valerie Worthy share a unique psychic connection. They also share Anotrothe, their invisible friend.

But not all invisible friends are necessarily imaginary, and Anotrothe isn't. He is a being from another world and is proficient in psychic abilities. When they are older, he tells the children that he is their guardian and that the psychic connection they share gives them capabilities akin to the ones he has. They were twelve at that time and he explains that they are still too young to learn, but assures them that he will teach them when they're older.

When they are eighteen, Anotrothe tells them there is a malignant force on its way to the planet and that they have to begin learning about their psychic powers and how to control them in order to help him stop the menace. Using a method that's unusual - but quite effective - he teaches them how to teleport and to use telekinesis and various other psychic abilities.

Then, circumstances arise that casts doubts in the teens about everything Anotrothe has taught them. However, they learn he is right about one thing: there is an inimical element that must be stopped. Unfortunately, the enemy is eons old and much stronger than they are and does not appear to have any weaknesses. Still, they have to find one, or everything they know and love will die.

As time passes, they grow increasingly afraid that there is no way to save their world, until one day, Shane discovers the enemy's lone vulnerability. There is a problem, though, and he is well aware of it. There is a danger he will eliminate himself along with the enemy. Can he do it without killing himself? And, will the adversary stay dead even if what Shane does works?

This is the tale of the singular relationship four teenagers have with their lifelong mentor, of their fight to save the Earth from a foe hell-bent on destroying it, and of what happens when the world learns about them.
