In an apartment in Washington, DC, four stuffed animals-Lambkins the wise lamb, Pookins the funny and brave cockapoodle, Womby the determined wombat, and Kiwi the curious kiwi bird-call themselves the Stuffie Squad. They read, explore, and look after their people, Sam and Judy. On trips to the family farm they find comfort by the fire, befriend a gentle black bear, and-deep in the woods-meet a mysterious woodland elf who offers a riddle:

The mystery arrives at a busy mall. While Sam and Judy shop, the friends clap for jugglers and musicians-until they notice something is terribly wrong. Kiwi has vanished. Panic turns to purpose as the Squad searches every store and mall level, asks for help, and then makes posters to rally the neighborhood. The riddle's "sign" reveals itself, a mix-up is solved, and the friends bring Kiwi safely home.
