The Streets Are Paved With Gold: Essays

Essays in Honor of Thomas Traherne Who is Thomas Traherne? Thomas Traherne was an obscure Anglican pastor, poet, and theologian in the seventeenth century in England (b. 1637?-d. 1674). He died at age 36 or 37, forgotten before dirt hit the top of his casket. That was the last the world heard of Thomas Traherne, for 2 1/4 centuries. Then in 1895 a book lover named William T. Brooke discovered two old manuscript volumes in a London secondhand bookbarrow. He sensed something potentially valuable, and pounced. After much to-ing and fro-ing, it was established that the author was Thomas Traherne. His poetry was first published in 1903, his prose in 1908. His fame has grown slowly but steadily since. Two of Traherne's greatest strengths were his knowledge of the character of God, and his appreciation of the beauty of God's world. This book, The Streets Are Paved With Gold: Essays, by Carl Wells, deals with miscellaneous topics. The book is dedicated to Thomas Traherne, and the title is borrowed from his writings.
