An accurate assessment of one of the more exciting features of the American West

In all the legends and lore of the American west, there is none more glamorous and exciting than that of the Pony Express. For only a year and a half starting in 1860, this service moved mail parcels from Missouri to California in approximately ten days. Given that the previous time was over a month, this was a dramatic improvement. The riders were fearless and they had to be. There were threats from the often-hostile Indians, the intense heat of the desert and the wild and unpredictable snowfalls of the winter. Through it all, the mail went through, only one mail pouch was ever lost. This book is an accurate assessment of the Pony Express, the reasons for its existence, the service it provided and why it lasted such a short time. It is an excellent item to include in elementary school courses of study of the American west.
