The Story of Ourselves: Teaching History Through Children's Literature

Students across the country have tagged history as their number one most-disliked subject in school. In "The Story of Ourselves," the contributors focus on the need for a stimulating history curriculum with the application of children's trade book literature as an indispensable ingredient for such a curriculum. The book is a collection of writings by trade book authors and public school and college-level educators, designed to offer support and instruction for teachers who decide to use children's literature in their history/social studies programs. Included here are such well-known authors as Russell Freedman, Pam Conrad, Milton Meltzer, Joan Blos, and Leonard Everett Fisher.

The Story of Ourselves: Teaching History Through Children's

Teaching history through children's literature is an excellent way to put a human perspective on otherwise dry lists of facts and dates. This book gives practical applications for using literature in the social studies class. I highly recommend it for social studies teachers as well as those who are committed to whole language and integrating reading and writing across the curriculum. It is an excellent classroom resource!
