The Steamboat Drowned

Elara wakes aboard a white paddle-wheel steamboat drifting through a black river that is not water.

Above her stretches a blank white sky. Beneath the boat moves the River of Ink, a place where forgotten stories, abandoned characters, and ruined ideas are carried after the world stops caring about them. At the helm stands a smiling captain with dead black eyes, whistling a tune that seems to hold the collapsing world together one note at a time.

The boat is called The Legacy.

It is not a rescue vessel. It is a loop.

As Elara begins to recover fragments of memory, she discovers she is trapped aboard the steamboat with other fading remnants of old animated stories: Betty, a sepia nightclub girl losing the edges of herself, Gus, a giant-hearted strongman built for simple goodness, Silas, a fast-talking alley cat hiding terror behind charm, and Porter, the baker whose place in the cast is more vital than anyone first understands. Together they uncover the truth behind the boat's prison logic: they were once part of a bright unfinished cartoon world called The Marionette Captain and His Riverboat Crew, and their original reels were deliberately mutilated before the story could ever reach its ending.

Now the damage is spreading.

The scenery loops. Time skips. Passengers vanish into static. The lower decks hide an engine room full of half-erased forms, and deep inside the vessel a projection room reveals the machine driving their reality frame by frame. If the reel burns through, the boat and everyone trapped on it will be erased into the River of Ink forever.

To survive, Elara and the others must recover who they were, confront the smiling captain at the center of the loop, and attempt the impossible: cut a new ending into the story before the static devours what remains of them.

The Steamboat Drowned is a dark fantasy horror novel about abandoned art, broken narrative, stolen endings, and the terrible cost of being kept alive after the story was supposed to stop.
