Thomas Wriothesley was never destined to become earl of Southampton, but on the death of his elder brother in 1624 the responsibility was thrust upon him.

He turned out to be very good at it. He spent some years trying overcome his father's debt burden and modernise estate practices, He also developed the Bloomsbury manor in London, which in time became the richest family asset.

On the political front he was called upon by Charles I to negotiate with the Parliamentary group and he was well respected by all parties. He sat out the Cromwellian period, even though they sought recruit him, and in 1660 he was appointed one of Charles II's chief ministers.

He died in 1667 without a make heir and the estate was divided between his three daughters.
