Quid pro Quo

Note the title: BLOCKADES. Plural. A lot of folks forget that the British conducted a distant blockade of Germany and the U-boat war was an attempt to do the same in reverse. The fact that the solution to the heavy losses of merchant shipping was in plain sight at all times makes the RN look just a little bit stupid. It took years to solve a problem that could have been solved in weeks. Even then, the lack of desire to try something new is a 'lesson learned' in the extreme: namely, not trying a new solution guarantees that the new solution does not work. The solution has to be doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. (I believe that is one definition of insanity.) This is a must read book for any one interested in WW 1 naval warfare.
