I have such mixed emotions about it, because right off the bat I was massively impatient with the emotional immaturity of lead character Dr. Carver Livingston. A successful veterinarian who gained wealth after inventing a surgical repair device, and whose practice is expanding, he can't be happy because he has spent his entire post-high school life pining for the girl who dumped him in high school and placing much of the blame on his father's withdrawal from their previous closeness. (I won't explain why because it's a spoiler). If I knew someone like this in real life I'd be screaming "get over yourself and get help!" because who holds on to a teenage crush for 20 YEARS, refusing to engage in a mature relationship? And I just couldn't swallow the contention that his hometown in Vermont was so small that everybody in town knew of his personal trauma, making him refuse to return home in all those years.
What redeemed this book for me was the description of Carver's epiphany while gazing at the magnificence of the Milky Way and realizing that he had to move forward in his life. This section was lovely in its descriptiveness.
I checked this out from my library - had never heard of the author but the jacket blurb caught my interest. Boo Walker has also written books under the name Benjamin Blackmore, and I might give one of those a try.
