This book, although old, is an extremely useful diagnostic tool for pinpointing where a child's weaknesses in language lie. It gives a set of 12 reading tests, as well as a spelling test. The reading tests range from Test 1, consisting of a series of questions to be read. These mostly nonsense questions which children find appealing, contain high-frequency words as well as words with a phonic base. The test gives not only a reading age (from 5 - 10 years)(which can be inaccurate, depending on where you live) but a reading standard, indicating how far along the reading trail the child has progressed. Thereafter follow subtests for, e.g. , blending skills, auditory perception, visual perception, making sense of nonsense words, comprehension etc. The spelling test of 40 words starts with phonetically simple words, simple words with irregular spelling, phonetically more complicated words, and finally more complicated words with irregular spelling. A spelling age is given,(from 5 - 12 years) but this test is of greater use as a diagnostic tool. I find this book of tests very useful and wish that a more modern edition existed!
