It is Christmas Eve and the situation on the North Pole is grim. Santa's elves are all down with the flu and there is no one to help Santa make the final preparations for the delivery of the toys. Fortunately, far to the south, on an island called Kindness Grove Knoll, there is a group of young people called the Spriitelees. By acting kindly three times in a row, they create a magic that causes a special kind of backpack to appear. The backpacks are called sparkpacks and they allow the Spriitelees to fly. Every Spriitelee except for Bob has a sparkpack, as he still needs to help one more person. When the Spriitelees heard of Santa's plight, they flew off to help him, taking Bob along. When they arrive at the North Pole everyone except Bob pitches in, completing nearly all of the tasks. However, one remained, the sleigh has not yet been prepared for transport. Since he was the only one left, Bob would have to do it. This frightened Bob, as he thought he was too small to do such a big job. He walked back into the house and what he saw startled him. Santa was standing by the fire and crying because he thought that he wouldn't get the toys delivered. This galvanized Bob into action, he immediately went outside and using a great deal of ingenuity, managed to get the sleigh out and the reindeer hitched. Once this deed was done, Bob was given his own sparkpack. Santa was so happy that he offered each of the Spriitelees a toy. After each the others had made their selection, Bob simply said that he already had all he wanted. With those words of joy, the Spriitelees flew back to their island and Santa prepared to leave to complete his job. This is an excellent book for children, demonstrating that sometimes we receive our greatest rewards when we give without expectation. So much of our lives are built around social interactions, yet we often forget that as we struggle through our daily lives. It is especially important to remember this at Christmastime, which is more about giving than it is about receiving.
