One of my favorite authors .. stumbled on a couple of his books traveling through Utah, and read everything else I could order back to back. I love his approachable style, easy yet so engaging you can’t put it down. Sometimes crying with laughter, sometimes weeping in earnest. Educational but story driven, a spiritual depth yet light, every one of his books is the whole package and a unique and worthwhile experience.

Fascinating account, hard to put down!

This book is about as entertaining as you get, I had to force myself to put it down once in awhile so I could savor it. A fine story by a fine writer, really takes you there and makes you laugh and cry. This book will stay in my library, it's a keeper.

Written with a fine taste of sharp-lined humor

The Split Sky: A Journey Of Discovery In Utah's Nine Mile Canyon is the autobiographical story of Tom McCourt's personal experience in a summer job as a cowboy on a large cattle ranch in Eastern Utah. The year was 1963 and Tom was only sixteen. This fascinating and memorable coming of age journey, is recounted among memories of horses, dogs, ghosts, grouchy elders and pretty gals. Written with a fine taste of sharp-lined humor, The Split Sky is one memoir that reads from cover to cover like a Hollywood adventure film come true to life.

More than meets the eye

The Split Sky is a remarkable story of discovery and goes deeper than the surface story suggests. We have all experienced in life that often-awkward and vulnerable time of growing up between adolescents and adulthood. The Split Sky colorfully and artfully illustrates this process for one 16 year old boy growing up in rural Utah. The true story of a young boy's sometimes painful and crushing disappointments, sometimes joyous and jubilant triumphs as he jumps from the nest and stretches his wings for the first time in an effort to live a childhood dream and in the process become a man should appeal to most. The Spilt Sky is an important snap shot, record of the customs, traditions, rights of passage and attitudes of people and their lives in eastern Utah during the early 60's. It is also an important record of life on a cattle ranch at the end of an era. The book starkly points out how times and attitudes have changed, some for the better, some for the worse. It reminds us of a simpler time and of innocence lost. The Split Sky is also the story of spiritual discovery for a young boy who is brought to the realization of a powerful and controlling presents in nature. He realizes for the first time how small and insignificant he really is compared to the powerful forces of nature and the one who created and controls them. At the same time he discovers that this all-powerful God is aware if him, and knows who he is and of his concerns. I would highly recommend this book for anyone. It should in some way spark memories, probably long forgotten to some, of your time of discovery. A time when we all rode the emotional roller coaster of dreams forever lost and dreams found. This book is ultimately about that impressionable and vulnerable time that we experience as we go through the transformation into whom we will ultimately become. I believe this book is well written for this first time authorScott Heino
