Author Diane McCarthy shows her storytelling strengths in creating believable characters the reader comes to know through all the twists and turns, joys and disappointments we all face in our own day to day lives. //The Spirit of the River// reads like numerous book genres, with a healthy mix of mystery, romance and drama. It makes for a hard to put down suspenseful novel. Jack comes from a life of privilege, well educated and seemingly on the fast track to being an outstanding lawyer. Terri seeks freedom and an identity, fleeing from her strange and reclusive mother. They share a glorious summer working as river guides, though their future together is uncertain. Their life paths cross again when Terri is wrongly accused and Jack intercedes and fights to free the woman he realizes he still loves. McCarthy gives us the drama of a trial, the sleuthing investigation of a mystery and the tenderness of a love that thrives and grows against the odds. Readers will relate with the tenderhearted passions of young summer love, and the desire to know our roots, following the journey of two young people whose lives were carried away like the currents of a river, not knowing what to expect around the next curve. Captivating!

Within 5 pages, I was hooked! While the story revolves around river rafting, its the characters and their lives that were spellbinding! The twists and turns this story takes continue to add to it - rather than weigh it down. I had to make myself stop reading it a few times because I simply did not want it to end. It had me up to the very last page and then I read that a few times, partly because my tears made it hard to read, partly because I didn't want it to end, but mostly because it was just a wonderful book from beginning to end. Diane McCarthy certainly has a way with the written word that speaks to me. I would love to see her continue writing such emotional and compelling stories like this one! I highly recommend this jewel of a book!

I thought this was a great story. I didn't want to put it down and when I came to the end, I didn't want it to end. You can really visualize the characters in this novel. The writer does a great job at hooking you in right away and getting you involved. Definetly a good read!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The author wrote in such a manner that I felt I could visually see and be part of the characters and scenery. There were many twists and turns but everything was woven together in a suspenseful manner! The Spirit of the River
A mystery that blends in romance
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
No one likes losing a relative, and being held responsible for it never helps. "The Spirit of the River" is the mystery of one Terri Valle, accused of her mother's murder, despite being as shocked as the police. Jack Anson, who has fallen for Terri, refuses to let love get away through a wrongful accusation and does whatever he can to clear her name. A mystery that blends in romance, "The Spirit of the River" is solid and riveting reading.
