Book Overview

This is a powerful and deeply moving story from Albania, once declared the world's first atheist state under the brutal rule of dictator Enver Hoxha. Through vivid storytelling, the book captures the immense suffering endured by the Albanian people during communism, a period marked by repression, forced secularism, and the systematic persecution of religious believers.
Amidst this backdrop of hardship, the narrative shifts its focus to one noble family whose resilience, patience, and unwavering faith serve as a testament to the human spirit's ability to endure even the harshest of trials. Their struggle for survival, marked by sacrifice and courage, is not just a personal story but a reflection of the suffering shared by countless families across Albania. The author, having had the privilege of meeting this family later in life, presents their journey with deep admiration and authenticity.

This true and inspiring story is masterfully brought to life by Burhan Al-Din Fili, one of the most prominent storytellers of our time. His compelling narrative style and rich historical insight make this book an unforgettable tribute to faith, perseverance, and the enduring power of the human will.

About Author
Burhan Al-Din Fili was born in Koplik, Albania, which at the time was under the Communist regime that strangled the country for decades. Young Burhan, however, refused to be cowed by an atheist regime. In 1976 he swam across Lake Shkodra, reaching former Yugoslavia where he was caught, jailed and interrogated. Later, he escaped to Italy where he lived in a refugee camp. In 1977 he moved to the United States, and in 1982 Fili went to Egypt where he studied Arabic and Islamic Studies at the renowned Al-Azhar University. After the collapse of Communism in 1991, he returned to Albania where he contributed to the democratic life of his people. When the regime of Milosevic viciously attacked Kosova in 1999, Fili joined Mercy USA, a humanitarian organization, in order to help the refugees there. To this day he contributes to helping the needy in different parts of the world. Fili is married and has four children.
