On April 11, 2014, Marilyn Olga Clare King-Rankine, M.D., a humble, industrious, and pioneering cardiologist/electrophysiologist-an immigrant in STEM-sighed her last breaths. Her withered down hands in the hands of her eldest daughter Fey, she passed from the frenetic world of one her beloved cardiac care wards-in her adopted city of Fort Worth, Texas-into the tranquility of the Next. She had journeyed so far from her native British Guiana (Guyana), South America, but had left behind a legacy in STEM for women and girls, women and girls of color, and all immigrant students to embrace. Dr. King-Rankine's passing marked a final, merciful release, after a courageous two-year battle with two types of rare, late-stage uterine cancers. She was 69.
The Specimen is an honest and poignant poetry collection by Dr. King-Rankine's daughter Fey, curated with photographs. Its leaves observe the evolution of a human life, the struggling perseverance against all odds in a mission, and the rough dismantling of one's everything in the stages of Death and Dying. Fey Ugokwe's previously published work includes "Wifey", a critically-acclaimed psychological thriller.
