A worthy read

A special forces friend introduced me to "Gayle Rivers" by way of recommending his book "The Five Fingers". The Specialist is more of a memoir than a novel. While the events in this book take place during the 1970's the operations could be easily translated to what our CIA and Spec Ops folks are contending with today.

Interesting read relative even to today's current events

Five Fingers is one of my favorite books. A novel by "Rivers". Whereas The Specialist is non-fiction. I believe it to be based on real events or events very similar to those described in the book. Considering the current climate of terrorism and counter terrorism the fight hasn't changed much in thirty years. Just the technology. For all I know this is Billy Waugh's story. It reads similar to his Hunt for Bin Laden. It's a worthy read.

A giggle and a handy tech manual for sanitation engineers

I am a water and sanitation engineer in developing countries where the "privy" and how to build it, is a subject of fierce debate among engineers and privy owners. I was given this book by a friend who thought it funny that I designed loos for a living! If I could recommend one course book for all wastewater engineers this would be it. Interesting insight into US folk stories and "hygiene practise". The specialist seems like such a likeable guy too.

The Specialist is a action thriller of the first order.

Once in a while a book comes along that once you pick it up you just can't set it down again. The Specialist is of that rare breed. I will not try to defend the author's rationale as far who deserves to die and who not. But the book is one hell of a ride. The chapter concerning his adventures during the Iran-Iraq war is well worth the price of the book alone. Find and read this book if you can.

A funny, funny book

For anyone who has ever lived in a house with an outhouse this is one of the funniest books ever written. For the first time reader it is a real belly laugher. For anyone who plans to build an outhouse it would serve them well to read this book first. Although tremendously funny, it contains a lot of good ideas on the best way to build one.
