Barbara Freeman takes the fear out of gardening with this delightful read. I am a novice gardener, and her book has opened my eyes to the process of planning, beginning, and cultivating a healthy and manageable garden. Her conversational prose style, accompanied by hand drawn illustrations and copies of her own garden plans, is encouraging and inspiring. This book made me made me aware that I should really think out how much time and effort I am willing to put into a garden, so that it continues to be an enjoyable hobby and does not become a chore. Yet, she suggests that you reward yourself with simple plantings at the beginning, even before you draw your garden plan. This book is written for real people, and makes gardening seem possible and enjoyable while still alerting the reader to potential challenges. I most appreciated the step-by-step process she presents and her experienced knowledge of things to be aware of for various kinds of plants and gardens. While I am not an experienced gardener, I imagine this book would have lots of sound advice for those who want to keep their gardens manageable and beautiful. I am really excited to start gardening now! Highly, highly recommended!
