The Southgate Notebook
SOUTHGATE, a residential district in North London, derives its historic name from when it was the South Gate of Enfield Chase, the King's hunting ground. You can see other links to this connection in nearby streets, such as Chase Road and Chase Side. This elegant residential area developed steadily in the 1930s, with many tree-lined avenues of large and impressive homes.
It is quite a busy area now, with three underground stations all withineasy distance, the beautiful Grade II Art Deco Southgate Underground, designed by Charles Holden, and two more nearby, Oakwood and Arnos Grove.
Nowadays, it's a cosmopolitan area. The population is around 15, 000, with a prominent Jewish community, as well as plenty Greeks, Greek Cypriots, Japanese and Turkish, with a great variety of restaurants reflecting great diversity.
Five synagogues have the word Southgate included in their titles, and there are many beautiful churches. Christ Church, near Southgate Green, commemorates Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee with its clock, and the church has the largest collection of pre-Raphaelite stained glass in all of London, designed by the famous William Morris, et al.
There are several green parks in the Southgate area, such as the delightful Grovelands, of 92 acres.
A notable resident of the area, amongst many other distinguished people, was Ron Moody, who lived at The Cherry Tree.
